Fleur's Story

Meet Fleur, a volunteer at the Community Kitchen

Fleur’s compassion for refugees was ignited at an exhibition in New York. Passionate about human rights, she was particularly moved by the mapped distances refugees travel to find safety.

When she discovered the ASRC was hiring volunteers, she eagerly applied and hasn’t looked back since. Three years later, Fleur has combined her love for cooking with her commitment to human rights.

“I researched volunteer cooking opportunities in Melbourne and felt most drawn to the ASRC because of the incredible work they do. I love creating healthy, tasty meals from whatever is in the fridge and sharing them with members, volunteers, and staff.”

Each shift, Fleur and the Community Kitchen volunteers assess the fridges to decide on the day’s menu before serving and cleaning up the kitchen. Throughout her years at the ASRC, many memorable moments stand out, especially one man’s gratitude after lunch: “He thanked me and shared how few people understand what refugees endure.” It was a poignant reminder of the hardships faced by those seeking safety and the vital work done at the ASRC.

If you’re considering volunteering, Fleur encourages, “Just do it! It’s the most enjoyable, rewarding, and satisfying day of my week. Everything about it feels positive and hopeful.”
