Inspired ASRC youth graduate from Leadership program

The new Youth Leadership program produced it’s first graduates in June. Of the 18 participants, 2 have been able to land employment and paid traineeships, 2 have recently started studying tertiary level courses, and 6 are active volunteers across a number of programs within the ASRC. These opportunities were a direct result of their participation in the Youth Leadership program.

The program was set-up to help build self-esteem, nurture leadership skills and foster a community of youths (15-25 years) whose program would be lead by youths. Over 8 weeks, themed workshops were chosen by the group, such as public speaking, small business skills and how to use social media safely. These were hosted by community leaders and subject experts from across Melbourne.

Program member, Elijah explained “for the first time, I had the courage to use my voice. I have never had a platform to share my ideas in privacy and freedom.”

The graduates shared their vision for the Youth Committee, which meets weekly to plan further activities. A mural was created during the program (pictured above) in the Innovation  Hub. It is an outline of Australia filled in by all colours of the rainbow and features values they feel are important to them and to Australia: hope, community, respect.

ASRC member, Hamid finds hope and a dream job

Hamid* arrived alone in Australia late last year and joined the ASRC Innovation Hub in February. When we first met Hamid, he felt hopeless and increasingly isolated as he faced the prospect of finding a job in Australia. Hamid like many other asylum seekers and refugees was reminded by many Australian employers that he would never find a job in his field of expertise, as his qualifications and valuable experience were not recognised here.

The ASRC became a place of refuge for Hamid, while the Innovation Hub enabled him to recognise his potential and nurture the self determination to pursue a career in graphic design, a field in which he had over 10 years experience.

Through the Member Volunteer Program, Hamid was able to apply his skills as a graphic designer, creating the Hub brochure and series of posters for the ASRC. A social mentoring program and employment training workshops gave him the support and confidence he needed to start applying for jobs.

Hamid secured a role last month in his dream job as a Graphic Designer. He left a note for us before he left:

“I am very thankful to all of you for your generosity and support during my difficult time. You built up my self confidence and now I am able to stand on my own feet to find out my bright future with your blessings.

Wherever I go in my life, I will always pray for ASRC.”
