International Volunteer Day

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC), pouring their time, skills, and compassion into ensuring refugees and people seeking asylum receive the essential support they need. From offering food and legal aid to providing healthcare and a warm, welcoming presence, our volunteers are the lifeblood of our mission. Every act of kindness they share creates ripples of hope, helping to build brighter futures and stronger communities.

Meet three of our volunteers as we celebrate their efforts this International Volunteers Day.

Joan, the ASRC’s longest serving volunteer, found her calling with the ASRC in 2002. She started in reception and spent the next 13 years being a welcoming face to all that walked through the doors. It was when the ASRC shifted into the current building that she realised her role needed to become a paid full-time position. Joan only wanted to remain on as a volunteer, so she helped the newcomers adapt to the workload. She had an immense influence on the creation of the Office Management Team -including the Reception- where she still volunteers.

Michael, a passionate advocate for refugee rights, volunteers in the Human Rights Legal Program, where he provides legal case worker support to the team’s senior solicitors. For Michael, it’s about the deep satisfaction he has from helping others. “I find the environment very supportive; you are also providing assistance to people in real need.”

Fluer joined the ASRC kitchen three years ago, when she saw a call out for volunteers to apply.  “I researched volunteer cooking opportunities in Melbourne and felt most drawn to the ASRC because of the incredible work they do.” Her work in the kitchen helps power the Community Meals program, a favourite for members. “I love creating healthy, tasty meals from whatever is in the fridge and sharing them with members, volunteers, and staff.”

These stories highlight the transformative power of volunteering—not just for the people receiving support but also for the volunteers themselves. Whether it’s teaching, stocking shelves, or advocating for systemic change, volunteers like Joan, Michael and Fluer embody the ASRC’s mission of dignity and empowerment. We are deeply grateful for their unwavering dedication and the profound impact they make each day.
