It’s Time for Real Change This Close the Gap Day
National Close the Gap Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a vital, urgent call for every Australian to stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is a day to demand that the basic rights of health, education, and justice are no longer treated as luxuries, but as the fundamental human rights they should be.
The National Agreement on Closing the Gap was meant to be our roadmap toward a fair future. But at the ASRC, we see more than just a document; we see the faces and the families behind the figures. We are deeply concerned – and, frankly, heartbroken – by the lack of genuine movement.
The Gap is more than just a statistic, it is a real struggle that First Nations peoples tackle every day. It is a child being denied the same education foundations as their peers, a grandmother that is waiting for culturally appropriate healthcare, the new family that doesn’t have access to the same prenatal or postpartum services as other Australian families.
While we wait for politicians and decision makers to act, your support and solidarity is even more important on this day. Here are some ways that you can show that you stand with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples:
- Educate Yourself on the National Agreement
Take the time to understand the four Priority Reforms which focus on changing the way governments work, such as strengthening community-controlled sectors and shared decision-making.
- Support Community-Led Solutions
The National Agreement emphasises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must have a “full and genuine partnership” in the policies that affect them. Seek out and support First Nations-led health and advocacy organisations.
- Hold Decision-Makers Accountable
Use your voice to demand that the government move past the “stagnation” of previous years. Reach out to your local MP and ask them what they’re doing to help us ‘Close the Gap’.
- Public Advocacy
Use the day to share information within your own networks. Highlighting the intersection between Indigenous justice and the rights of those seeking safety helps build a broader, more compassionate movement for equity in Australia.
By observing National Close the Gap Day through these actions, we move closer to a future where the health and life expectancy of First Nations people are no longer determined by systemic failure, but by a shared commitment to dignity and self-determination.
