This International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Let’s Confront the Rise of Racism in Australian
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21st March serves as a sombre reminder of the persistent shadow racism casts over our global society. In Australia, a country often celebrated for its multiculturalism, this day should be more than just a commemoration; it should be a wake-up call to confront a disturbing truth: the increasing emboldening and amplification of racism within our very own political landscape.
In response, the ASRC has launched Together Against Racism, a 7-day critical appeal to challenge the rise of racism and anti-migrant narratives in Australia.
Recently, we’ve seen a rise in political talk that targets and sidelines minority groups. Some politicians use fear and “us vs. them” narratives to win votes, which makes hateful language feel normal. This isn’t just about individual bias; it’s a systemic problem where people in power use their platform to spread intolerance. For many Australians, the results are real: more discrimination, more fear, and a deep sense of exclusion.
We see the real-world impact of this political talk most clearly in how we treat refugees. When politicians use harsh language, they stop seeing people and start seeing “problems”. By framing vulnerable families as threats or burdens, they hide the fact that these are human beings with basic rights. This kind of political game makes it harder for the community to show the compassion and kindness that people fleeing danger actually need.
To stop this rising tide, we must all speak up. Whether it’s in a casual chat or on the news, we need to call out racism whenever we see it. It is vital that we hold our politicians accountable for what they say and do. Calling out racism isn’t just about “being polite”; it’s about defending the basic values of respect and equality that every fair society needs.
We must also actively choose compassion. This means putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes and recognising our shared humanity. By listening to those who experience racism and valuing our diversity, we can ensure everyone feels safe and respected, no matter their background.
This International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, let’s commit to more than just reflection. Let’s commit to action—challenging racism wherever it appears and pushing back against the narratives that divide us.
If you believe in a fair, multicultural Australia, now is the moment to act. Donate to Together Against Racism and help fund this 7-day critical appeal to equip communities across the country with the tools to challenge hate and bring people together.
