“I find the environment very supportive; you are also providing assistance to people in real need.”
Meet Michael, a volunteer at the ASRC’s Human Rights Legal Program
A lawyer by profession, Michael is deeply passionate about the community legal service sector. Leveraging his experience, he volunteers with the ASRC’s Human Rights Legal Program, providing legal case worker support to one of the team’s senior solicitors. “I undertake real casework in this role and feel that I make a contribution to the Australian community.”
A pivotal moment in shaping Michael’s interest in refugee issues came from one of his favourite albums, ‘Albertine’ by Brooke Fraser. One of the main songs on the album addresses the genocide in Rwanda and includes a particularly impactful line: “Now that I have seen, I am responsible.” This, combined with his own parents’ migration experiences, constantly reminds Michael of the widespread nature of refugee issues. He recognizes that the world is far from perfect and believes that a greater love calls on humanity to support one another.
“I find the environment very supportive; you are also providing assistance to people in real need.”
Michael highly recommends volunteering with the ASRC. “I find the environment very supportive; you are also providing assistance to people in real need.” One of his favourite aspects of volunteering is how sincerely supported and valued he feels. “I am consistently thanked as a volunteer, and I feel significantly appreciated.”
