Information for people impacted by the crisis in Ukraine

New legal assistance available to Ukrainian nationals in and outside of Australia

If you are in Australia and living in Victoria

The Department of Home Affairs has announced that they are automatically giving a 6-month visa extension to anyone whose visa expires before 30 June 2022. The Department will contact you directly about this: there is nothing you need to do.

The Department is also prioritising existing visa applications for Ukrainian nationals.

If you have questions for the Department, you can contact them on 131 881 or using the Ukraine contact form here.

We hope to have more information about the Department’s policy regarding Ukraine soon.

If your visa expires in two weeks or less and has not been renewed, you can call the Human Rights Law Program phone advice line.

Please contact a free legal service in your state for advice:

If you are outside of Australia or calling on behalf of family outside of Australia

The Human Rights Law Program is not able to assist with visas for people outside of Australia, but they may be able to give you resources that can assist. For example, your relatives may be eligible for a Special Humanitarian visa

To find a fee-charging lawyer who may be able to assist with Australian visas, you can search accredited specialist immigration lawyers in Victoria here and access the Victorian Migration Lawyers Directory here.

Your relatives may also be able to seek protection in a neighbouring country. For example, the European Union (EU) has agreed to offer temporary protection to people who are displaced from Ukraine. For more information and to keep updated on other developments, we suggest you monitor the European Union Agency for Asylum or seek assistance directly from the authorities in the country in which your relatives are sheltering.
