Celebrating International Women’s Day at the ASRC
This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the incredible resilience, strength and leadership of women seeking asylum. At the ASRC, we recognise that female refugees often face extra hurdles: navigating a complex, often punitive immigration system while managing the unique social and physical risks that disproportionately affect women.
This year’s theme of “Give to Gain” is embodied in so much of the work we do. It is a core value of our organisation that when we give women opportunities to learn, grow, and feel safe, the broader community benefits greatly. Women are powerful agents of change; when they are supported, they don’t just transform their own lives – they strengthen the very fabric of our society.
To give can come in many forms. At the ASRC, it looks like a holistic ecosystem of support:
The Women’s Empowerment Program Empowerment starts with belonging. Our Women’s Empowerment Program provides a safe, female-led space where members build community, learn new skills, and reclaim their agency. From craft circles to leadership workshops, this program ensures that women aren’t just recipients of aid, but architects of their own futures. This program also offers a much needed window of time to socialise with other women who are going through similar journeys.
Justice and Protection: The Human Rights Law Program For many women, the journey to safety involves navigating gender-based persecution claims, including domestic violence. Our legal team provides specialised support to help women articulate their stories within the rigorous framework of Australian law, ensuring their voices are heard and their right to protection is fiercely defended.
Unlocking Opportunity through Education In many parts of the world, education is a privilege rather than a right. For refugee women arriving in Australia, a historical lack of schooling or recognised qualifications can create a daunting barrier to employment. Without the same formal education as their peers, the path to financial independence can feel out of reach.
This is where the “Give to Gain” philosophy is most vital. While English literacy is a fundamental first step, our program also provides vocational pathways, certificates, and digital training. We meet women exactly where they are – whether they are picking up a pen for the first time or translating prior expertise into the Australian workforce.
By removing these barriers, we ensure women have the confidence to speak for themselves and pursue their professional goals. When women are empowered with skills, we all gain a more vibrant, inclusive community.
