MEDIA STATEMENT: ASRC welcomes Albanese intervention to preserve humanitarian intake

Media Statement, Friday 28 August 2026

The ASRC welcomes the Prime Minister’s intervention to maintain Australia’s humanitarian and refugee intake program at 20,000 places.

We were shocked and deeply concerned when we saw the reports yesterday morning that the humanitarian intake would be cut by 30%.

We have always advocated for a fair program. Yesterday we swung into action, mobilised and furiously advocated to the Government that all 20,000 places be protected, as we know how precious and transformative each place is to refugees and their families.

The Prime Minister has made the right decision to listen to the community and respond to the backlash by intervening and confirming his Government’s commitment to 20,000 places.

This is a win for humanity, and for refugees. And it is recognition that a generous humanitarian intake is rooted in Australian values of fairness and compassion.
