The Community Food Service offers a Foodbank in Footscray and Dandenong and a Community Kitchen in Footscray.
Our service consists of two Foodbanks (Footscray and Dandenong) and a Community Kitchen (Footscray only).
The ASRC Foodbank supports people seeking asylum and refugees to access culturally appropriate food and essential items in a warm and welcoming environment.
We aim to reduce food insecurity by providing access to sufficient nutritious and culturally appropriate food that meets the requirements for an active and healthy life. We also provide basic toiletries and cleaning goods.
The ASRC Foodbanks supports approximately 1200 people per month, approximately 40% of them are children.
Foodbank goods come from a variety of sources, including donations and items purchased. The amounts allocated depend on the number of people in the household and whether they are completing a weekly or fortnightly “shop”.
Goods that we provide include perishable foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, eggs and yoghurt; non perishable foods such as milk, rice, tinned goods, tuna, oil, spices; cleaning products such as dishwashing and laundry liquids and basic toiletries.
Community kitchen offers hot, nutritious meals for people to enjoy in our community space (and takeaway, if available).
Our kitchen volunteers cook meals from a variety of cuisines, with some recipes shared by ASRC clients.
